Gu-Zheng, also called "Zheng" (zither), is a traditional Chinese stringed instrument usually made of phoenix tree wood. It has a rectangle sound box and a surface in a curve with tight strings, which were once 13 during the Tang and Song dynasties and later increased to 16. Today the number of the strings has been developed to 21.
As early as in the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Period, the Chinese zither become popular in the Qin State (today's Shaanxi and Gansu), therefore, it has also been called "Qin Zither". The instrument had been widely loved by people in the Tang and Song dynasties and underwent some development in the Qing Dynasty. During the long-time evolvement from generation to generation, different areas of China gradually formed into their own performance styles and schools, What's more, it was spread to foreign countries such as the North Korea, Japan and Vietnam.
The common performance technique of Gu-Zheng is to pluck the strings with the thumb, index finger and middle finger of the player's right hand, with his left hand pulling the strings. Despite the complex fingering the instrument is easy to start. Even those green hands with their fingers slowly playing glissando will generate sounds of the flowing stream, pleasant to hear and acceptable by most people. The Gu-Zheng is a must-learn skill for ancient Chinese men of letters. The famous pieces of it are the Fishing Song at Dusk, Autumn Moon over the Han Palace and Moonlight of Spring River.
