Wednesday July 29, 7pm, Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Sydney’s advocates of Australian art-music present the latest discoveries of young new music virtuoso pianist - Zubin Kanga

Rising stars align on Wednesday 29 July at Crush, as Australia’s most dynamic young pianist, Zubin Kanga, is showcased in a concert presented by chronology arts, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music from 7:00pm.

Zubin briefly returns from studies abroad to perform an exhilarating program of recent works by an eclectic mix of the brightest rising stars and established voices of art-music composition from Australia and the UK. Currently studying postgraduate performance at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, London, with the famed new-music pianist, Rolf Hind, Zubin has selected some of the most innovative compositions created for the piano in recent years.

chronology arts, having just been listed as “inspirational and innovative Sydneysiders who have made a unique contribution to the city’s creative culture” ( http://creativesydney.com.au/sydneys-creative-catalysts/ ) presents concerts of new music by emerging composers to encourage musical innovation in Australia. Following their recent success Gradations of Light, lavishly presented at CarriageWorks on 15 May 09, Crush comes as a stark contrast within their 2009 series, focusing on only one instrument – the piano.

“The music is as exposed as it can be in this concert with one performer and one instrument. Yet Zubin’s flawless technique, expressive range and commitment to unearthing the most exciting new repertoire guarantee this as a concert not to be missed. He sits at the forefront of the long tradition of the piano virtuoso.” Writes Managing Director for chronology arts Andrew Batt-Rawden

Zubin’s previous Australian recital in Sydney, July 2007, presenting masterpieces of the 20th century along with recent bold Australian works was received with the highest critical acclaim:

“With fiery charm, sweeping fluency and intelligent concentration, Zubin Kanga told much of what you wanted to know about piano music in the last half-century but were afraid to ask… Whatever the cause, Kanga is a bold and talented advocate for recent music, tackling its technical and conceptual challenges with audacity and tenacious cogency.” Peter McCallum (Sydney Morning Herald) July 2007.

In Crush, Zubin ups the ante presenting ever more new and exploratory works in the spirit of chronology arts’ creative vision. Program highlights include Claudia Molitor’s dance and yoga inspired Tango, the frenzied virtuosity of Alex Pozniak’s Crush and the Australian Premiere of George Benjamin’s Shadowlines, inspired by the canons of Baroque and Renaissance composers - the most recent piano work, and one of his most significant, by this major British composer.

Alex Pozniak, composer of the title piece Crush, has worked collaboratively with Zubin for over 2 years in completing this electrifying work.

“Zubin is one of the most outstanding and dedicated performers of our time. The word ‘impossible’ does not exist in his dictionary. He can, and does, do anything and actively pursues a healthy challenge, a tribute to his artistic integrity.” Alex Pozniak, Artistic Director of chronology arts.
