Musica Viva proudly presents acclaimed British cellist Steven Isserlis and Hungarian pianist Dénes Vàrjon, in a program comprised entirely of works for cello and piano by Robert Schumann. The duo will be touring to Sydney on Saturday 25th July and Monday 3rd August, 2009.
Steven Isserlis is a cellist whose passion for music transcends normal boundaries. He is acclaimed worldwide both for his musicianship and technical prowess. He is equally at home drawing in audiences for chamber music or performing in recital. He is comfortable delving into the archives to emerge with a forgotten compositional gem to revive or on the concert platform playing concertos with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and conductors.
While Isserlis has been a regular concerto performer in Australia, this tour provides an opportunity for music-lovers to hear this outstanding artist in recital with his distinguished colleague and musical soul-mate, Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon, who will be visiting Australia for the first time.
Isserlis, a self-confessed devotee of the music of Schumann, will cast fresh light on his lesser-known works including the often overlooked Third Violin Sonata (arranged for cello by Isserlis himself), as well as the composer’s later and better known compositions for an instrument the composer held very dear.
In her review of their CD recording of Schumann’s works for cello and piano for Hyperion, Gramophone’s Harriet Smith describes the duo’s interpretation as revealing the music’s “wonderfully considered and luxuriant aspects” while demonstrating Isserlis’ “utterly innate relationship with pianist Denés Várjon”.
Isserlis describes the often ethereal music of Schumann as “never really touching the ground”. Schumann, who began as a pianist and cellist, came later to composition in a life which was plagued with self doubt and depression. He was a passionate dreamer however whose love of the cello is clearly demonstrated in the cello writing in all four of his symphonies and concertos and by his chamber music.
Artistic Director for Musica Viva, Carl Vine, says he looks forward to hearing the partnership of Isserlis and Várjon giving voice to the full spectrum of Schumann’s musical and emotional outpouring.
Enter the imagination of this great German romantic composer, Robert Schumann and enjoy what promises to be memorable performances of his music for cello and piano when this outstanding duo embarks on its national tour for Musica Viva.
