Braemar Gallery presents ‘Landscape Transfiguration’ the exhibition, three fresh dynamic interpretations of the Blue Mountains landscape.  Local artists Meredith Cooper, Carolyn Eadie and Mel Jones deliver a sassy original show, taking the spectator beyond the descriptive.

Meredith Cooper’s exuberant and impressionistic oil paintings are a joy to behold.  There is a distinctive style emerging here, these paintings attain a sophisticated vibrancy.  Working on several paintings at a time which may take many months to complete, Meredith’s dappled brush technique building up the painterly surface, manifests a life like presence of her subjects, creating shimmering hypnotic portraits of some of the most idyllic locations in the Blue Mountains.

A graduate of the National Art School Meredith has been exhibiting publicly for over 12 years and is a finalist in the prestigious 2009 Mortimore Prize, NSW richest realist art awards.

In perfect contrast is the softer more lyrical style of Carolyn Eadie. These fabulously contemporary ink wash and mixed media paintings cleverly capture the aura and mysticism hidden in the landscape. Her experimental and spontaneous mark-making, create a perfect balance between natural and abstract forms developing mood and atmosphere.

Carolyn is currently studying Fine Arts Degree at the Nepean College, and is a regular exhibitor with Blackheath Art Society. She was recently awarded a ‘commended’ with the Society by Matthew Lyn, a respected artist and finalist in the Archibald.  Matthew described Carolyn’s work as “A very interesting technique which really gives a sense of being in the landscape not just looking at it, feels a bit like gazing into the Wild Dog Mountains from Green Gully.”

Complementing Meredith and Carolyn’s work is the highly sought after Pochoir paintings by Mel Jones. Pochoir is a hand cut stencilling technique characterised by its crisp lines and brilliant palette.  It is clear that Mel has a natural instinct for this bold technique, originally inspired by Japanese woodblock printing, then perfected in the 1900’s by the Art Nouveau movement.  Mel has embraced this charming old world method, delightfully encapsulating the decorative naturalism this style imbues.  Embodying the quintessential Australian Blue and Grey Gums of the mountain gullies to create her distinctive stylised compositions, they are real head turners.

Studying fine arts in the 90’s Mel has exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the Blue Mountains and was recently a finalist in the Westmead Art Competition 2009 sponsored by the Arab Bank Australia, and her work is on permanent display as a part of the SWAHS collection.  Over the course of the exhibition Mel will be demonstrating her style of Pochoir, for more info ph: 0417 250 630.

Whether it be the opalescent quality of Meredith Coopers ‘Coachwoods of Witches Leap’, or Carolyn Eadie’s meditative ‘Wilderness Walk II’, or Mel Jones meticulously crafted ‘Spring Gums’ this is a show not to be missed.
