Planning a road trip looking for ADVICE or equipment please help

Hello me and my girlfriend are planning a trip from Sydney up the coast to at least the Whitsunday's and back . Then were planning on heading back on the road after another short stay in sydney. I'm planning on buying a van or station wagon to sleep in and basically I'm new to this. What should I plan on packing? Do you have any awesome places you'd suggust stopping at? Do you know of any cheap places to stay along the way or free camp sites?
 
I need help please, any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm on a tight budget and would love to save money any way I can. I'm also looking for any second(or third) hand books that would help me on my journey. Maybe you know of a good website that will help me plan my trip a little better. Thank you and again any info will go a long way.
