Date Listed: 29/06/2008 The Social Rugby World Cup takes place in the beautiful city of Cape Town in June 2009. I'm looking to put together a team to represent Australia in this tournament. The tournament isn't aimed for old duffers like myself ! The age limit is from 18 years to 35 years of age and players should be of a good standard. The average player is one with first grade ability but perhaps through work committments or through preferring to have a social game, just doesn't have the time to train to first grade level. I need to put together a squad of 30 players, probably 17 forwards and 13 backs and will coach the team during the tournament and in several sessions before we leave. My coaching experience has been up to elite level in rugby union and to club level in rugby league with some minor international exposure. Interested players need not necessarily be Australian nationals, but will have to be willing to play under the Australian flag and most likely in a jersey based around the green & gold, or NSW blue. The cost of the trip will be around $125 for the tournament fee plus around $1000-$1500 for the accomodation and shuttles package. Flights to Cape Town will be arranged with a reputable company, such as Flightcentre, and are likely to be around $1300-$1500 based on current prices. $3000 will put you into an experience of a lifetime, playing at a world cup, representing Australia ! The trip also includes being present for the SA v. British Lions tour games, wine tours and a tour of Cape Town and the area. Oh, and yes, a great social scene will be throughout !! During the tournament there'll be at least 5 games and everyone will get roughly equal game time. Game venue is at the Villagers Rugby Club, one of South Africa's most famous club sides and the Cape's 2nd oldest. I have previous experience in South Africa and have several friends in the area and will look to arrange a night out at a very social rugby club nearby for an extra night out. At this stage, the only unknown costs will be for playing kit, team polos for travel etc and the cost of hiring pre-tour facilities for training sessions. Per player these shouldn't be too great. To register your interest, just reply, let me know your name, contact email & phone plus your playing position, age and playing experience. Add any questions that you may think of and I'll send out 'team' email around the middle of July. |
